For this episode of the Les Initiés series, AMCA welcomes director, screenwriter, and post-production assistant at Canal+, Emma Qian Xu. Through these meetings, the school gives audiovisual professionals a platform to share their career paths, roles, and the realities of the industry with students.
In this interview, Emma Qian Xu reflects on her connection to the program and a career path defined by experimentation. After an initial year with Mr. Bénichou in 2017-2018, she took a break from her studies before returning in 2022. She also discusses her current project: a feature film she is co-writing with screenwriter Leopold Dewolf.
Her account is notable for its sincerity. The director explains that she is still searching for the role that truly fits her, noting that this search is an integral part of any career in cinema. Exploring different positions—moving from writing to directing or post-production—is a great way to better understand one's own interests and skills.
"If you want to do something or have an idea in mind, you have to take action immediately, rather than just keeping that idea to yourself."
To students who wish to work in film, she advises not to hesitate to explore the various roles in the industry and, above all, to keep their passion for cinema alive. It is a conviction shared by AMCA, where students write, shoot, and edit their own projects from their very first year.
